12 Most Disappointing Games Of 2022

Disappointing Games Of 2022

You can’t deny that an incredible selection of games has been offered this year, from God of War Ragnarok to Elden Ring, Sifu to vampire Survivors, and countless games in between. Whatever your personal GOTY selection, there are several to choose from, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t a few clangers mixed in there. There have also been a lot of disappointing games in the last 12 months.

Because we are gluttonous for a bit of misery, we have decided to reflect on the most disappointing games of 2022. While most of the games are on this list due to lack of quality, there are also some other games that received a lot of praise at launch but were disappointed in other key areas. In this sense, here are the most disappointing games of 2022.

1. Saints Row

Developer: Deep Silver Volition
Publisher: Plaion, Deep Silver
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S

The long-awaited Saints Row reboot seemed like a big slap in the arm for the franchise, taking everything that worked at previous installments and turning the dial to 11. Unfortunately, the results could not live up to the hype.

Saints Row felt like an underdeveloped attempt to capture the special thing about the original games, but it lacked any real creative spirit. As a game, it certainly wasn’t the worst game ever made, and you could enjoy the missions and characters, but the overall experience was so ropy that it felt like Cyberpunk 2077 by 2022.

Volition has been working hard on patches and updates for Saints Row, so there’s still time for a redemption arc. Whether it will happen for Saints Row is another story.

2. Rainbow Six Extraction

Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X &S

Be honest: you probably forgot that Rainbow Six Extraction launched this year. If it had not been for the fact that some cosmetics on the topic of extraction were provided in Rainbow Six Siege, we would have forgotten about it too.

Extraction was Ubisoft, who tried to take advantage of the goodwill that the limited-time outbreak mode received for only one month when it was launched in 2018. The two had similar playstyles, focusing on co-op play against an enemy alien force, rather than the competitive multiplayer that Siege has developed.

Unfortunately, the extraction of Rainbow Six had no long-term impact, as the random and repetitive level design meant that the game lacked any real identity.

3. Babylon’s Fall

Developer: PlatinumGames
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5

At one time or another, Platinum was considered one of the safest names in the entire gaming field, consistently releasing high-quality character action games with an impressive regularity.

Babylon’s fall seemed to be her first colossal misstep – a live service game that offered very little service and had so few players that you couldn’t call it live at all. What happened during the development of Babylon’s Case is unknown at this time, but it is clear that the game has arguably become the biggest stinker of 2022.

Considering the critical success of Bayonetta 3, it can be assumed that platinum still has its magic, but where did this magic disappear during the fall of Babylon? We may never know.

4. Destroy All Humans! 2 – Re-Probed

Developer: Black Forest Games
Publisher: THQ Nordic
Platform(s): PC, PES5, Xbox Series X & S

Those who grew up in the original Xbox era of PS2 and gaming will undoubtedly have some kind of nostalgia for the destruction of all people! Series, a sadism simulator designed to bring entertainment through spaceship cargo.

The remake of the first game was received quite well in 2020, so the remake of the sequel was always a sure thing, but destroy all people! 2-the exercise simply did not correspond to what the first game had to offer. Part of it was related to changes in the gameplay formula introduced and adopted in the original sequel, while part of it was due to poor attempts at humor, relying heavily on cultural stereotypes.

Both of these reasons together suggest that some things were only better in the past . Destroy all people! 2 is one of these examples.

5. Sonic Origins

Developer: Sonic Team
Publisher: SEGA
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X&S, Switch

An HD collection of the first four Sonic games feels like a blast from a release. Throw all the games together, let’s play as an ankle in Sonic 2 and 3, and give us some stuff behind the scenes. Bish, Bash, Bosh, really good nosh.

However, Sonic Origins somehow managed to screw up such an open goal. Instead of porting the original code, Sonic Origins used a revised version of all four games, which, in theory, should improve all the games, especially Sonic 1. The reality was a series of glitches and problems that made Sonic Origins a chore.

However, the real kicker was that SEGA removed the older versions of Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Sonic & Knuckles from the list, meaning that players could only buy Sonic Origins to play these games (legally). A prime example of an anti-piracy measure that only actively promotes more piracy.

6. Gotham Knights

Developer: WB Games Montreal
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Platform(s): PC, PES5, Xbox Series X & S

For some, Gotham Knights may not have been a disappointment just because they did not have high hopes for the game, which was understandable. Gotham Knights emerged from an already large shadow in the form of the Arkham games, and yet it missed the mark.

Gotham Knights did not do themselves any favors with all the marketing “Batman is dead, guys,” which is usually always a comic code for “He’s coming back to the finale.” Still, Gotham Knights also disappointed gamers with its weak open world and boring battle.

The writing and characterization of The Bat Family are worth a visit, but apart from that, there is very little to see in this book.

7. Gran Turismo 7

Developer: Polyphony Digital
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Platform(s): PS4, PS5

There is no doubt that Gran Turismo 7 is a great game. If you want to play a brilliant simulation racing game, Gran Turismo 7 sits on the top of the mountain as the best, but this does not mean it is immune from disappointments.

On a basic level, Gran Turismo 7 disappoints with its lackluster career mode, which relies heavily on the idea that you’re just as much of a petrolhead as the game developers. However, the real disappointment came from how tedious it could be to unlock new cars, which was compounded by the fact that the game would make you buy more credits via microtransactions.

Being nickel and dimed from a game always feels disappointing, but if you’ve already paid £70 for the game, those feelings are magnified tenfold.

8. The Last Of Us Part 1

Developer: Polyphony Digital
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Platform(s): PS4, PS5

9. The Callisto Protocol

Developer: Striking Distance Studios
Publisher: Krafton
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X &S

After the first announcement of the game, the Callisto protocol immediately shot to the top of the wish lists of most players. A sci-fi horror game that comes from the same spirit behind Dead Space? That sounds like a surefire recipe for success. Unfortunately, after the release of the game, the final result did not quite live up to the hype.

While the Callisto protocol is far from a bad game, with incredible graphics and competent gameplay, players have found that the real horror part of the experience practically does not exist. In addition, some dubious design decisions regarding combat have made the core game of the Callisto protocol much more frustrating and repetitive than most players would expect. Lackluster performance for PC gamers at launch only exacerbated the problems.

Again, the potential is still there to have a great time using the Callisto protocol, but Dead Space Killer is certainly not that.

10. Chocobo GP

Developer: Arika
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform(s): Switch

It was only a matter of time before Square decided to turn their acclaimed RPG series Final Fantasy into a kind of kart racer for the second time (the less is said about Chocobo racing, the better), so this year’s Chocobo GP seemed like a logical step. As a game, Chocobo GP is fine, with decent gameplay and some mediocre tracks. Not so disappointing so far.

However, Chocobo GP has attracted an incredible amount of anger after launch thanks to the use of its microtransactions. In particular, a Reddit post warned users not to allow their children to play the game on the Nintendo Switch, especially if payment details were attached to their account, as the game’s “predatory microtransactions” pretty much regulated all the games unlocks.

11. Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Developer: Game Freak
Publisher: Nintendo, The Pokémon Company
Platform(s): Switch

From a purely commercial point of view, Pokémon Scarlet and Purple is the farthest from a disappointment, as both Nintendo and the Pokémon Company seem to be raking the dough at a record pace. Nevertheless, fantastic sales did not prevent many gamers from considering Pokémon Scarlet and Violet a disappointment since the terrible state of game performance and rampant glitches at launch left a bad taste in gamers’ mouths.

Really, the disappointing aspect of Pokémon Scarlet and Purple is how the Pokémon Company seems to be pleased with Game Freak Ragged, forcing them to develop more ambitious Pokémon titles for full release on the Nintendo Switch rather than quietly dropping repetitive releases on the Game Boy and the DS. Pokémon’s place in Nintendo’s library has changed, but The Pokémon Company will go through the same development cycle until the wheels fall off, and that’s disappointing.

12. Trek To Yomi

Developer: Flying Wild Hog
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X &S

It’s no fun to disappoint smaller projects, but that doesn’t change the fact that Trek To Yomi didn’t live up to its initial hype when it finally hit the market this year. When it was first revealed, Trek To Yomi looked like an interesting and novel interpretation of the samurai revenge story. Still, many problems prevented the game from realizing its true potential.

While the game’s visual style was impressive, most people found the combat a bit too easy and inaccurate, and the exploration needed to be more to keep the game fresh between combat encounters. Despite launching in Xbox Game Pass alongside other platforms, Trek To Yomi has yet to manage to grab the attention of gamers, making it a footnote for 2022 as a whole.
